Clarity (Gamma 40 Hz)

A 40 Hz gamma binaural beat, in the band associated with bound-perception and peak awareness. Gamma is the most hyped and least settled binaural band — stimulation studies exist, but outside narrow lab conditions the real-world effects are unclear.

What it is

Beat frequency: 40 Hz · Carrier: 500 Hz · Band: 30–100 Hz (Gamma) · peak awareness (most controversial)

A 40 Hz beat carried at 500 Hz — brighter and faster-pulsing than the other presets. Some listeners find it too stimulating; others report an unusual 'sharp clarity' during cognitive tasks.

Why this frequency

Gamma is tied to conscious binding — the integration of sensory features into unified perception. A small cluster of Alzheimer's-related 40 Hz stimulation trials (MIT, Tsai lab) have tested audio + visual 40 Hz flicker; results are early and preliminary. Outside those narrow contexts, the real-world effect of 40 Hz binaural beats on cognition is unclear.

Relevant research: Garcia-Argibay et al., 2019 (Psychological Research).

Best for

  • experimental use only
  • short peak-focus attempts
  • novelty pairing with caffeine rituals

One honest caveat

Do not trust internet claims about gamma binaural beats 'treating' anything. The Alzheimer's research uses in-person stimulation at specific intensities, not a 40 Hz app. This preset is a curiosity, not a therapy.

How Loam uses binaural beats

Binaural beats work as a layer in Loam — you can pair one with any soundscape or with The Moment, at an independent volume, through headphones. They're not sold as a miracle cure. The honest position: some people find them helpful, the effects are subtle, and the real research base is narrower than the internet claims.

Try it in the Loam app

Clarity (Gamma 40 Hz) is one of six binaural presets in the Sound Studio mixer. Download Loam to listen with headphones — they are required for the binaural effect to work.
