Head-to-head comparisons

Pick whichever app you're currently using or considering — each page walks through where that app wins, where Loam wins, and a practical decision framework.

  • Loam vs Calm Sleep-story polish vs. research-grounded daily practice. Where Calm’s narration catalog wins, and where Loam’s generation approach fits better.
  • Loam vs Headspace Animation-led curriculum vs. curated, cited practice. Good for different personalities — here’s how to pick.
  • Loam vs Insight Timer The biggest free library in the category vs. a deliberately small, research-selected one. Different shapes for different brains.
  • Loam vs Balance Multi-week adaptive programs vs. multi-second in-the-moment sessions. Both are real personalization at different timescales.
  • Loam vs Waking Up Sam Harris’s philosophy-rich contemplative app vs. Loam’s practical, mood-responsive daily wellness toolkit.

Alternatives & free-tier shortlists

  • Alternatives to Calm Five apps worth comparing if Calm isn’t clicking — ranked by the reason you’re actually looking.
  • Alternatives to Headspace Where each Headspace alternative does something Headspace doesn’t — research, philosophy, free catalog, long-arc, sleep.
  • Free meditation apps What you actually get in each app’s free tier, and where the paywall sits. Honest, including on our own tier.

How we write these

Every comparison follows the same rules:

  • We recommend competitors honestly when they're the better fit. If Calm is right for you, we say so — on the Calm page.
  • We don't fabricate aggregate ratings or invent head-to-head feature stats. Claims we can't verify don't go on the page.
  • We link to each app's research or editorial positioning where it exists, not our summary of it.
  • We update these pages when a competitor ships a meaningful change — see our methodology for the review cadence.

Not finding yours?

If you're considering an app that isn't on this list (for example Ten Percent Happier, Open, or Simple Habit), we haven't written the direct comparison yet. You'll find many of them covered briefly inside alternatives to Calm, alternatives to Headspace, and free meditation apps.
